Fan Art Policy

Can I Make Fan Art or Write Fan Fiction?

Introduction – The Basics

I am incredibly grateful for the passion and creativity fans bring to my work. Whether you’re drawing characters, designing tattoos, crafting cosplay, or writing stories, it means so much that my creations have inspired you to make your own. With that in mind, I welcome fan-created works under certain conditions to help protect both your rights and mine.

There are two major distinctions you’ll see throughout this policy: non-commercial and

commercial use.

  • Non-commercial means you’re not making or trying to make money from your fan creations in any way.
  • Commercial means you’re selling your work, using it to promote a business, or receiving any financial compensation or donations related to it.

Let’s break down what’s allowed and what isn’t for both.

NON-COMMERCIAL USE

You may absolutely create fan art, fan fiction, cosplay, music, or any other kind of creative work inspired by my world as long as you’re not selling it or profiting from it.

This includes:

  • Posting fan art or stories to social media (Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.)
  • Sharing music or animations on YouTube (without monetization)
  • Uploading fan fiction to free writing platforms like Archive of Our Own (AO3) or Wattpad
  • Drawing tattoos for friends (or getting one based on my world!)
  • Creating cosplay or fan edits for fun

If no money is changing hands—directly or indirectly—then you’re in the clear.

However, just because it’s non-commercial doesn’t mean anything goes. Please still credit the original work clearly and do not claim official association or endorsement.

COMMERCIAL USE

Now, if you’re thinking about selling your fan creations—whether that’s prints, stickers, or something bigger—please read this next part carefully.

Definition of “Commercial” Use

For clarity: If you are making money from your fan work in any way, including selling items, receiving tips or donations, or funding projects on Patreon or Kickstarter, that is considered commercial.

Fan Art Policy – Layman’s Terms

ALLOWED COMMERCIAL USES (with restrictions):

You may sell the following types of fan art:

  • Physical art prints, stickers, or playmats featuring your own original interpretations of characters, creatures, or settings from my stories
  • One-off private commissions (example: someone pays you to draw their favorite character once)
  • Tattoos, even if the tattoo artist is paid for the design or inking

But only if:

  • You do not copy, trace, or substantially reproduce official artwork (book covers, illustrations, maps, logos, etc.)
  • You do not use symbols, text, or design elements from my world out of context (like using a glyph or symbol as a standalone design)
  • You make it explicitly clear your work is unofficial (e.g., labeling it “fan-made,” or “inspired by [My Work]”)

Please note: If your visual fan art includes identifiable or copyrighted art from my work—especially illustrations, symbols, logos, or exact character poses—it cannot be sold.

NOT ALLOWED COMMERCIAL USES:

You may NOT sell any of the following items if they feature my characters, settings, names, or designs:

  • Clothing (t-shirts, hoodies, etc.)
  • Mugs, water bottles, or household items
  • Jewelry, keychains, enamel pins
  • Plushies, dolls, toys, 3D models, or printable STL files
  • Replicas of objects, weapons, maps, or in-world artifacts
  • Phone cases, laptop skins, or accessories
  • NFTs or other blockchain-related assets
  • Fan-made book jackets or bookmarks
  • Merchandise with quotes, book phrases, or titles (e.g., catchphrases, mottos, or slogans from my stories)
  • Commercial use of symbols, glyphs, or logos, unless part of a character or scene (e.g., a tattoo shown on a character’s body, a patch on a costume)
  • Commercial art created by AI (Artificial Intelligence) tools such as Midjourney, DALL·E, or ChatGPT

Use of Crowdfunding:

You may not use platforms like Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, or Patreon to fund large-scale fan projects or receive regular compensation for fan art or fan fiction.

Fan Fiction, Comics, and Writing

You are welcome to write and share fan fiction or fan comics based on my characters, worlds, or stories—but only non-commercially.

What’s Allowed:
  • Publishing stories or comics on free platforms (e.g., AO3, Wattpad, Tumblr)
  • Including my characters or settings in roleplay communities or original fan projects, as long as they are clearly unofficial
  • Using small snippets of dialogue or reference material in your comic panels (when paired with original art)
What’s Not Allowed:
  • Selling or monetizing fan fiction in any form (including webcomics, paywalled content, or ad revenue)
  • Using quotes, poems, or passages from my books in your work (outside of very brief, clearly transformative uses)
  • Publishing physical or digital books (including zines, collections, or anthologies) based on my world without permission
  • Using AI tools to generate stories or comics and then monetizing them
  • Submitting fan fiction to me directly—I will not read or review it for legal reasons

Promotional Use of Fan Art

If you plan to give away fan art at conventions, book signings, or events, I ask that:

  • You do not use it to promote or brand your business
  • You credit it properly as fan-created and unofficial

This is to avoid confusion with official merchandise or over-commercialization of my IP.

Official-Looking Branding or Social Handles

Please do not use names, tags, handles, or branding that might make it seem like your account or product is “official” or endorsed by me.

Examples of what’s not okay:

  • @Official[CharacterName]
  • “[My Book Name] Merch” on Etsy
  • “[My Book Name] Cosplay Co.”

Instead, please use language like:

  • “Fan-inspired”
  • “Unofficial fan project”
  • “Based on the world of [Book Title]”

Use of AI-Generated Fan Works

I do not allow any AI-generated fan art or fiction to be used commercially. This includes:

  • Art made with Midjourney, DALL·E, or similar tools
  • Writing generated or heavily assisted by ChatGPT or other LLMs
  • Voice or music produced through AI cloning or voice synthesis

Fan works made using AI are welcome for personal use only and must be clearly labeled.

Legal Summary

  • All characters, worlds, phrases, art, and designs from my work are protected under copyright and trademark law.
  • I retain all rights, and permission is not automatically granted for commercial use beyond what’s described above.
  • Any “official” licensing must be requested in writing and granted through a formal agreement.
  • Use of my intellectual property beyond these guidelines may result in takedown requests or other legal actions.

Final Note

This policy is here to support creativity and community—not to shut it down. I want you to enjoy and be inspired by my stories, and I love seeing what you create. But to make sure everyone is treated fairly and rights are respected, these boundaries help keep things clear and safe.

If you ever have a question about what’s allowed, feel free to reach out—or when in doubt, assume it’s not allowed until confirmed.

Thanks so much for being part of the fandom. Your art, your stories, and your imagination make the world of my books feel even more alive.
